Back in 2003 The Black Keys were asked to support Beck on his tour across North America. It was an early break for the band, introducing them to a wider audience. This video footage is from the last night of The Black Keys’ stint opening for Beck at Irvine Meadows, Irvine, California 27 June, 2003.
The live video reflects the close rapport and mutual appreciation of Beck, his touring band Sea Change and The Black Keys. The Black Keys have always been publicly thankful to bands like Beck and Sleater Kinney who supported them in their early days. It’s an affection that is clearly mutual given the scenes captured in this rare footage.
The video was recently re-discovered by fan and videographer OscarTripe. There is very little footage of The Black Keys ever playing with other musicians live. This spontaneous collaboration is unique, fresh, and shows Pat and Dan clearly loving the moment early in their career.
The Black Keys Fan Lounge recently featured footage OscarTripe took of a separate 2003 Black Keys’ Portland show here.
OscarTripe was able to be side of stage and had asked permission to film the band. As OscarTripe explains it:
Found my tape of the Irvine Meadows show from June ’03. The good news is that it’s the complete 40 minute set. On the bad side I shot it from an odd angle (side of the stage, almost behind the band) and due to the outdoor setting the audio’s not so hot. The venue’s security goons weren’t particularly pleased to see my video camera so I had to film solely from the backstage area. This was the Keys’ final show opening for Beck and Dan joined him onstage for “Loser” later that night. I managed to get this on tape as well.
Near the end of The Black Keys’ set Josh Klinghoffer (Beck’s guitarist that tour) joins them for “No Trust”. Josh Klinghoffer was recently revealed as the new guitarist for The Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
On The Black Keys’ “She Said, She Said” finale Josh Klinghoffer and other members of Beck’s band (Greg Kurstin, Steve McDonald) plus a mess of Roadies rush the stage and surprise Dan and Patrick.

I saw the ‘Keys on this tour, but I saw them at the UIC Pavillion in Chicago and there was none of this awesomeness (Beck and ‘Keys playing together and joking around, etc). In any case, this tour marked the first time I ever saw/heard The Black Keys and I’ll never forget it. Very cool stuff. Thanks for posting it!
