The Black Keys being added to the Twilight movie soundtrack created some deal of angst for some fans. Black Keys’ fan Jade Luber brought some semblance of balance and reason to all the emotion in this recent post: The Black Keys Sell Out? But forgetting about all the hype, what about the actual song ‘Chop and Change’?
Listen to Chop and Change here‘Chop and Change’ appears to be recorded during the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio sessions in August 2009. The Nicole Wray backing vocals are a give away.
No doubt it is one of those tracks that wasn’t quite ‘finished up’ or worthy to make the cut with the other 15 on the Brothers album. At 2 minutes 26 seconds it’s not exactly a slow burner, more a work in progress from the sound of it. It’s nevertheless expressive of the time and place; another song about a hard done by girl.
‘Chop and Change’ has a delicious piano line flowing through it . More interestingly, as has been pointed out by forum member Kepnerb, the original guitar riff appears to have been developed during recordings for the Blakroc album. You can hear Dan playing the riff on bass during the NOE webisode 6 (see below).
The Black Keys never seem to be too sentimental about their music – it’s recorded, released, move on. This one just happened to be moved on to a Twilight Soundtrack for release.

wow, this song shouldn’t be on that soundtrack. it’s actually good. Very Black Keys and does not bend to fit the record. I heard The Dead Weather’s contribution to the soundtrack and honestly I don’t like it at all.
I love this song! I think it totally fits the darker side of Eclipse.
Most people assume the only side to myer vampires is the Cullens, there is a whole darker side. Victoria and her Newborns are evil creatures that live off those around them…I don’t know what Chop and change actually means but it seems a similar thing.
The begining is very jarring, perfect for the scene in the begining. Victoria fits this song, she was hard done by too.
Totally cool song
Exhibit A offered as proof that getting your great music into a popular soundtrack is a good way to expand your fanbase:
I had never heard of the Black Keys before, but was so intrigued by Chop and Change from hearing the Eclipse soundtrack, started googling the phrase and stuff about the song….
I’m downloading Black Keys albums now, which has to be good for the band and their fans.
@allegra great! welcome to the party
Hum, I’m not sure what goes through the mind of that one guy or gal in charge of putting together a movie soundtrack: sound? lyrical content? But the moment I looked up the meaning of the phrase ‘chop and change’, the song immediately matched up with one of Eclipse’s plot points: the way Victoria exploits the holes in Alice’s sight by improvising, making quick, erratic decisions and then letting her lackey handle what appears to be the ‘big’ stuff. The girl knew how to chop and change, indeed.

I’ve never heard of the black keys before the eclipse soundtrack. Chop and change is one of the best songs on the CD. Thank you for being part of Eclipse, don’t think I would have heard your music otherwise! This song is the bomb!!!

I believe I’m gonna go and watch Twilight one more time. I genuinely loved it!
Love this song. First listen to it on the Twilight soundtrack when it came out.
