As Zane Lowe pointed out, The Black Keys’ have a long history of live to air performances on BBC Radio. Legendary BBC DJ John Peel was an early supporter and gave the band airtime in 2003. Listen to the Peel Sessions here.

Zane Lowe is the heir apparent to the John Peel legacy. A famed DJ influencer in his own right, Lowe was the first to play Brothers‘ Tighten Up anywhere in 2010 and was given the honour of being the first to play El Camino‘s Run Right Back in 2011.

Video: The Black Keys Live at Melkweg 2006

In a recent interview with Mojo magazine (June 2011), The Black Keys’ drummer Patrick Carney described the band’s 2006 album Magic Potion as their worst. This may have just as much to do with the music as it did the grueling world tour accompanying it; at no other time was fatigue so visually apparent. Almost every photo of the band from this era shows Dan and Pat sporting greasy hair and dark, sagging bags under their eyes. Dan became unkempt, growing a thick feral beard and seemingly wearing the same railroad jacket to nearly every gig.

One thing is certain; Magic Potion is a raw, fuzzed frenzy to high hell. It’s their simplest, most riff driven album, and while it may not lend itself well to everyone in its studio album format, these qualities are what make it arguably their best live album. This fact only adds to the enigma -- there is NO professionally-shot footage from this era, other than a handful of songs from a small gig they did at Grimeys record store in Nashville. It’s as if their displeasure with this album, along with the stench of Dan’s railroad jacket, had manifested into a curse, barring anyone from witnessing the sins that went down during a live Magic Potion set. There were whispers of a legendary third live DVD that was lost to time. Turns out that the myth was true! Archaeologists have unearthed this DVD from the ancient ruins of fabchannel, and it is now available for all to witness the glory of the Magic Potion tour live.

Live at Melkweg is not actually a DVD but its quality is on par with Live at the Crystal Ballroom and Live in Sydney. It was actually a web stream hosted by fabchannel, a website which archived live concerts. Fabchannel met its demise due to financial reasons, and it was thought that this footage went with it. Thankfully it’s been resurrected by Fan Lounge forum member Rumboon, who downloaded it from the site before it was taken down.

Live at Melkweg is filled with rare treats. Modern Times is a billowing sermon of scorn -- Dan’s voice sounds like it’s about to crack the whole way through, though it never falters. Unlike the way it’s played as a medley now, Stack Shot Billy ends before starting into Busted. Strange Desire/The Flame is a haunting medley, mixing the malevolence of the former with the grief and slow burning yearn of the latter. Even the staple songs have their own unique quirks; during the breakdown to Busted, there’s a tremolo drenched outburst from Dan’s guitar that sounds nothing like the version we are used to hearing. There’s also that trademark white Ibanez Lawsuit SG, the guitar that typified Dan’s sound at this point in time. And, of course, Pat slams the shit of out his drums with the ruthless swag we’ve grown accustomed too. His playing was rushed in spots, and his kit sounded a bit thin, but only when compared to the beast of a set up he’s got goin’ on now; it’s nothing but a testament to how much he has improved over time.

Live at Melkweg is a must-see for any fan of the band.

Photos & Video: Backstage With The Black Keys @ Bonnaroo 2011

One of the more annoying aspects of not being at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, was the selective webcast of the event which, for whatever reason, failed to broadcast The Black Keys performance. Performing on the main stage, The Black Keys by all reports rose to the occasion by doing what they do best, week in, week out. The only faux complaint seemed to be they only played for about 60 minutes.

Interestingly, and hilariously, the band were introduced to the stage by Aziz Ansari. If you click through to chrishawkcarter’s Youtube channel you’ll see he’s videoed the entire set off the Bonnaroo big screen with excellent sound. Hey, beggars can’t be choosers:

The Bonnaroo folks were good enough to post this snippet of Tighten Up. What an epic view from the side of stage of the carpet of crowd as the band would have seen it sretching to the horizon and singing along. Let’s hope more of this footage is eventually released:

Some lucky folks were backstage, watching the band, and posting photos of the performance. Watching a show backstage or rather best described side of stage is a bucket list hope for most fans. Only the lucky and well connected get the opportunity it seems. At these bigger festivals there is more space and therefore more opportunity for the lucky and connected.

Live virtually for a second, imagine if you were there, or backstage at any show, with this view.

Video: Booker T Joins The Black Keys On Stage

Rarely do The Black Keys deviate from their tried and true formula and indulge their musical influences on stage. It was therefore a rare treat for fans to see Booker T Jones join the band at The Lawn at White River State Park, Indianapolis, IN, on 10 June, 2011.

Fellow Nashville resident, Booker T played organ on ‘Ten Cent Pistol and I’ll Be Your Man.

Booker T is one of the many and varied musical influences on The Black Keys and Dan Auerbach in particular. Booker T is one the most influential instrumental musicians through his work with Booker T. & The M.G.’s and their involvement with Stax records, the history of soul and R&B music. The Black Keys’ album Brothers of course tips its hat to many elements of the sounds that Booker T and others pioneered.

Booker T was supporting the band and played his own set prior to The Black Keys’ headlining set. You can really here Booker T cut loose on I’ll Be Your Man, filling Dan’s normal guitar lead. Even when backed by touring musicians Nick Movshon and Leon Michels, they don’t play I’ll Be Your Man with this accompaniment. Certainly, the organ sound is never this full or prominent, but it sounds so good.

All bodes well if The Black Keys’ are in this kind of mood for their Bonnaroo performance and Dan Auerbach’s featured super jam performance with Dr John particularly.

Video: The Black Keys Live In Austin

For those who came late to the party this live recording is essential viewing. Recorded in October 2003 at Emo’s in Austin, Texas, USA, the The Black Keys’ sound is punctuated by Dan’s long mourned telecaster guitar that was mainly used throughout this era.

This performance has finally made it to YouTube in full after languishing in Google video land for years. It was originally released as a DVD in 2004, a so-called official bootleg.

Many of these songs are played infrequently or not at all these days. This isn’t surprising, since in 2003 the band only had Thickfreakness and The Big Come Up to work from. No Fun is, of course, the Iggy Pop cover frequently played live at the time. You know you’ve really gone back in time when Dan introduces Set You Free as a new song off “our new album”. Heavy Soul just blows up the encore.

In an ongoing project to document the band’s archaeology here it is for the record. It’s interesting to view this now in light of the recent Coachella performance featured on this site. You don’t see much (any) tuning up on stage anymore. Times have indeed changed.
