Pretty much an over-the-counter effect that you can pick up at your local Guitar Center. From what I understand, Dan really only uses the Green Russian Muff for live work and relies heavily on an Ibanez Standard Fuzz, EQ'd of course in the studio with his small amps. I think two resistors are different values. Almost the same exact circuit. Like Misa said, the Pi is a bit more shrill and trebley and the Sovteks are usually more bassy/woofy. But for just screwing around, you can go ahead and buy the Pi and adjust your amp and guitar settings to get very close to the sounds you're looking for (like Misa also said). The Hoof fuzz from Earthquaker Devices is what you really want if you get some extra cash. It's like a Sovtek muff but WAY better quality/durability and more tonal options too. For the price the Sovtek goes for on eBay you should honestly just buy a Hoof or some other boutique equiv instead. Although Dan uses a lot of vintage fuzz pedals in the studio, a Big Muff has remained on his live pedal board for some time now. If you're not overly discerning, a new Big Muff Pi should work fine and should be less expensive. The historic line of Big Muffs tend to have the same overall fuzz feel but with shades of tonal bloom. I would say the Sovtek tends to be a little woofier while the new reissue has a little sharper high end. Nevertheless, you can sculpt the sound plenty between your guitar, the knobs on the pedal, and your amp. This also brings up a point that a lot of Dan's fuzz sound actually comes from the amps. Search the forum for plenty of discussions on Dan's pedal effects and even a couple videos that go through all of Dan's touring equipment. I am really into the rythm guitar he has used very much in the new album. He still lays some heavy licks, but the bulk of the album is rythm chord dominated. What pedal would be best for that fuzzy yet not overpowering sound that allows for rythm and a warmer fuzz. I really love the Sovtek but its much to expensive for now. Is the Big Muff PI comparable? Suggestions??
