Could someone enlighten me on this song/compliation of sounds? It sounds really cool and artsy but I can't grasp the meaning especially the title of it with it being so completely different than all of Dan's other work...and on the album he placed it in between two upbeat rock songs, so what's the symbolism there?

To date: I've been a fan since early 2002 and I have attended 20 of their concerts and 2 of Dan's solo. I have also met Patrick quite a few times, but never Dan unfortunately. The Black Keys are a part of my soul.

Not sure about all the sounds that are in it, but I'm guessing it was just used to break up the two tracks maybe. And the title probably came about because Dan said he needed something to break them up, so when asked "why?" he simply said "because I should".

Btw, I hope no one looking at your posts has bad epilepsy.

I agree with Nick, I think the title is a joke, he knew people would wonder why he put this track with all those crazy sounds on the album... I bet if you asked him personally why he named it that, he'd say "because I should." I don't think there's any deeper symbolism. It fits in real well between Heartbroken and Whispered Words, probably just a mood setting bridge between those two songs.

I always thought that the chimes and what sounds like train rails sort of conveyed a feeling of being on a journey, which I find Keep It Hid to be. Also, there is some sounds that are played backwards which makes me feel like it's saying "Ok, now we're going back to the start.." I've said it before but I'll say it again the whole album to me sounds like you're sharing a boxcar with some hobo and he tells you his life story. The chimes come back towards the end, as the journey comes full-circle and we are "Goin' Home".

And maybe I'm reading way too much into this, but Keep It Hid as an album deals with a lot of feeling of remorse and regret, and the title "Because I Should" seems to fall along the lines of a feeling of regret...

I agree with busterdouglas re: feeling or regret. There is a inarticulable sense of sorrow/regret in this album. Also agree with TBKmagic and Danleary above as to the "why" of the title/placement/track.
