Mirby?? what does this the best? anyone else??

also how much variety do you get out of earthquaker devices hoof fuzz? 4 knobs? must get some radically different tones out of that beast? i know it sounds like dan in the youtube demo but surely you can go some fairly different places with it?

You'll get a lot of people on here touting the danelectro reel echo.

I've never used one but a lot of respected players seem to be using them as a cheaper, more portable option to this, which is probably the best thing out there:

I just use an analog delay and get some really good slapback. maxon's are very solid analog delays.

Danelectro is the way to go. I've been using mine for a long time. It's affordable, versatile, and sounds great. However, if you've got the money, nothing beats the fulltone.

Dan has used a lot of different pedals for slapback. Danelectro, Fulltone, Guyatone, etc. Right now I think he's using a Sitori Sonics Reel Repeat, which is a good one and not crazy expensive.

I like the Way Huge Aqua Puss. All kinds of cool. A lot of people like the MXR Carbon Copy.

Sorry I'm late-

For slapback I've used the following...

Analogman AR20DL (Dan used this for a while too)- http://www.buyanalogman.com/AR20DL_Analog_Delay_p/am-ar20dl.htm
They don't make them anymore. I sold mine on Criagslist and it sold very quickly. Great for slapback, but not worth what you'll have to pay to get one.

Ibanez DE7 - this is by far the best value out there. does great slapback and much much more for a very low price compared to what's out there. highly recommended. don't let its looks/price fool you, solid pedal with a great sound. i've owned 2 or 3 of these. every time I sell it I end up buying another one 'cause I miss it too much. *it looks like these may be discontinued so I'd snatch one up if you're at all interested.

Danelectro Reel Echo- as others have mentioned, this is a very cool pedal. Dan used/uses one and so does/did Dante from Hacienda. I liked it a lot but sold it because I didn't like the way it colored my sound. It could have been my rig, or some other factor, but I always got a certain flavor in my tone from this thing and I just wasn't digging it. Obviously it's a great piece of gear though and folks have success with it. here it is on ebay for $129 shipped, new in box. only 2 available, and I'm not sure if they'll ship to AUS

Earthquaker Devices Ghost Echo - I've never used one but I've wanted to buy one for a very long time. Reverb pedal AND can be set for slapback echo as well. Made in Akron Ohio by the friend-of and former tour manager-of TBK. Particularly appealing to me because my '72 Fender Musicmaster has no reverb. But if you already have 'verb in your amp, you may be better off spending your money on an actual delay/echo pedal.

Get the Video Player

*Oh just wanted to add, don't forget to get the AC adapter for whatever you end up with. Delays/Echos are notoriously hungry for batteries.

The Fulltone Tube Tape Echo?? It's over $1000, who the fuck uses that? Even Dan Auerbach stopped using that on the road. I heard it's a very finicky piece of gear. Might be cool in the studio though.

If you want slapback, no need to pay $1000. Good god. Shit, for the $1000+ you'd pay for the Fulltone you could get an amp or a guitar AND a slapback pedal. AND have money leftover.

Someone mentioned the Sitori Sonics Reel Repeat, and that's what I would go with if you want to splurge and spend some cash on something cool.

It's $188 plus shipping.

And as for the Hoof question, I've never used the 4 knob version but the 3 knob version is insanely good. And versatile yes. You can get a wide range from the tone knob. From woofy to bitey and everything in between.

Carbon Copy for me. Does the job and it's reasonably priced. (comparatively)

my two recommendations for slap would be the Boss DM-3, which is my only delay at the moment, it provides a nice crisp echo that doesn't sound too dark or smeary, and it can handle being hit by a boost or preamp or fuzz! You definitely have to look used for these. Luckily I landed mine through a buddy that turned me on to these

I've also heard great things about the Strymon El Capistan delay. Crazy versitile, has been hailed as the most tape-like delay in a stomp box by many people. It's a little pricey, but it doesn't even begin to touch the price of a fulltone TTE, not to mention the upkeep for one!

For ease of availability, the Line6 DL4 is a great delay, I used one for eight years, I just never really dug the size and the operation, but it sounded pretty good.
