i will use my quote -- in rock n roll its plagiarism, but in hip hop its sampling, because hip hop guys have guns and rock stars have PR agents.

Yeah, it sounds like they directly sampled it from Blackrock's "Yeah Yeah".

Get the Flash Video

At least when The Black Keys used the material they made it their own. It is weird that this comes so soon after the Blakroc track though..

I've gotten my hip hop on plenty and I actually really like Black Milk. His last album was really cool. I have little to no problem with sampling, but it does take the mystique out of the sample when you know EXACTLY how he heard it. It's not like he went crate digging with his little porto-player and stumbled upon Blackrock. DOOM is what really gets my head moving.

Meh hip hop.

A bit like saying "Meh, rock 'n' roll", don't you think? There are as many different styles of hip hop now as there were styles of rock in the '60s (couldn't even begin to compare it to rock now as every band seems to get their own genre anymore). To dismiss the whole genre... well, to quote Dan, "Hip hop is the new rock 'n' roll. And anyone who doesn't think that is living in the past."

If you've listened to a wide variety of hip hop artists and haven't found anything you like, fair enough, but to drop into a hip hop discussion just to dismiss the genre as a whole because it doesn't float your personal boat seems less than constructive to me.

(Hi, these are my rantpants. Like 'em? I don them from time to time.)

Its not as un-constructive (if thats even the right term) as "you suck..." which was posted on our cover of heard it through the grapevine lol. Or another "This is gay..." that appeared on ma cover of Sinnerman haha!

I don't think you need to listen to a lot of a particular genre in order to say you don't like it. Eg i will say i have a distaste for dance music i've heard a bit from being out n about, i know i couldn't listen to it on my own at home and enjoy it. But i haven't delved into the history of dance or spent a lot of time listening to it because i just can't enjoy it. Maybe this is the same for TBKMagic.

Now of course there are a few, a very minimal amount of dance songs i enjoy when i'm out, and it'll probably be the case for magic that he may stumble across a hip hop song he likes, but even if that happens its fair enough to say you still don't like the genre without having to force yourself to listen to it all the time and become and expert in its every aspect before you say "right ok, i've now studied this ensemble. i am an authority on this genre of music and my decision is.... it's shit!" which is exactly what i would say if asked about dance music even though you may catch me raving like a pill poppin lepper victim in the corner of a club to a tune or two...i stress... every now n then hehe

It would be silly to ask anyone to become an expert in something they're not interested in. But you know you've heard more than one rock band you didn't like, yet you still listen to rock music.

Perhaps I'm too used to people who have heard one 50 Cent song and declare hip hop to be shit when there is so much more out there. De La Soul is not like N.W.A. is not like Ludacris, you know?

Plus, if you don't like hip hop, Dan will like you less.

(Joking, people! It's a joke! Laugh!)

My major contention with the comment was the random "rain on your parade"ness of it. But I should probably know better than to comment on anything before 10 a.m. I'm not good at mornings.

go listen to anything from Rawkus records from 1998-2001, then tell me you don't like hip-hop...especially listen to Soundboming II. From there I'd search out Rhyme Sayers and Def Jux. I could go on and on and on and on...
