There was a thread with this title on the old TBK forum.

Chulahoma is an incredible album. A great collection of songs. Every single note played is dripping with passion and feeling. It's a special album that takes me to a higher place when I listen to it. Everyone should own that album.

Feel free to share your feelings and experiences with this album.

My Mind is Ramblin' may be the best thing they've ever recorded.

I totally agree...every note drips with emotion. Im a huge junior kimbrough fan and love this album. Doesnt seem to be too much information about this album though. Was it recorded in the basement. Its saw raw and amazing. You can feel the pain and sorrow in Dan's voice. His guitar playing is amazing throughout the thing and Pat is driving the bus! Amazed at the perfect dynamic levels Pat brings to the table

I couldn’t agree with you guys more. I find that it’s nearly perfect in every aspect. Probably the album I listen to the most, for kinds of reasons, and personally, I think “Have Mercy on Me” is one of the best songs ever; it’s cool, it’s soulful, it makes my dick move...
My girlfriend also made me a Chulahoma themed t-shirt for my birthday once (Black tee, white “The Black Keys” across the top, and the pistol right below it). Awesome t-shirt. Was even complimented by a homeless man once…
Recently got my vinyl copy for Christmas too (Couldn’t afford it for the longest time)…

Have mercy on me is unreal. The first minute of the song just starts by totally kicking your ass, it calms down, and then Dan asks for mercy. Picture perfect. I still listen to it a ton but I really dig it during the summer. I've got a lot of nothing around where I live, like to drive around in the middle of the night listening to the album.

It's definitely a GREAT album. I often wonder why they don't perform any of the tunes live off of it. Possibly a royalty issue??? They could easily substitute "Work Me" or "Keep your hands Off" for "Everywhere i go" (which i also love). I think they should do a show, possibly on the banks of the Ohio River in late July,a hot summer evening, and play nothing but the gritty thick stuff. All of Chulahoma, everywhere i go, no trust, i cry alone, when the lights go out, keep me, strange desire, black door, elevator, run me down, leavin trunk, stack shot and busted. To top it off a thunderstorm is on the horizon and i'm with my girl drinking some ice cold Dortmunder Gold (Great Lakes Brewing Co, Cleveland,Ohio).Mmm, i'm SO ready for summer! Anyway, that's my take.

..i was blind, for a time, but now i'm fine. The choice is mine..

Of all the Keys records, I have definitely listened to Chulahoma the most. I remember the first time I listened to it, those 27 minutes were so hypnotizing I felt like I was drifting in and out of some kind of altered state. Reading Dan's liner notes about how he first heard Junior probably influenced this feeling. I can listen to this record alone and feel the sorrow, or put it on during a road trip and ride the groove. I think the playing on it is fantastic, so spontaneous and dynamic.

I also think it is very well produced, I love Patrick's snare sound on the first few tracks. Added instrumentation of bongo and what sounds like a farfisa organ add some unearthly touches. And the whole idea of paying homage to Junior adds to this ghostly, spiritual quality. Overall, the record has a soul surging through it that I've never heard achieved by another artist. And it rocks.

The best way I can put it is this-

It is very rare that an artist can take another talented artist's work and improve on it to this degree. VERY rare. Hardly ever happens folks. We're talking Jimi Hendrix doing Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower type shit here. That is the magnitude of Chulahoma.

If ever there was a record that was made for just kickin back in a chair with a beer or a glass of whiskey and just driting off into the music, this has to be it. The first time I listened to it was in the car in the late summer after it came out, and I remember when it ended I felt like I'd been in a half-hour trance. It just made me want to listen again and again.

Brilliance...
