I belive this was taken by the infamous Chris Johnson, It was posted on Facebook by MuddyRootsMusic Nashville with the following description: "It's good to remember who looks up to who. Dan Auerbach is seen here with T-Model Ford I've been told this pic came from his old bands website." My guess is that it was when Dan was with The Barnurners. Enjoy

I didn't take that photo. I do wish I would have snapped a shot when I saw Dan sitting on the stage in Potts Camp MS watching Robert Belfour performing.

Thanks for posting that interview, CJ. Great story!.. But I got one lil problem with it. Dan made Grennville, Ms. sound like Baltimore, Md.! Ha! It aint THAT bad. Yea, theres poverty, and the other downtrodden issues that plague small-rural Ms. towns. But it aint like your gona drive through and see people smoking crack and shit, on the side of the street.

I agree, but I think he said it that way as an indirect way to build himself up. "look how tough and raw I am...going in there just to jam". I don't think he realized that it can come off as kind of smug.

"'T-Model Ford got robbed for 2,000 dollars the other day,' says Johnson. 'Then someone threw a brick through his window. Then the 88-year-old white woman who was teaching him how to read and write got raped and beaten to death. This all went down in Greenville (Mississippi), which is one of the worst shitholes in America for violence and crack and degenerate goddamn madness. We'd like to get T-Model out of there but he won't leave.'"
...you were saying?

Well Gabe.. What im saying is that ive been to Greenville several times (have you?). Not once did I see crack, feel threatened, get robbed, or even looked at the wrong way... Ok,.. so let met visit a town, hear or read about a solitary fucked up incident, take it out of context (excluding the rape. Do you know t-model, read up on him any? Do some reasearch.. Im not saying anyone deserves to be robbed, but its very possible that he could have severely angered someone) then go tell people what shithole it is.
Back to the rape. I guess that it could've happened. If it did, its very fucking disturbing. But let me ask ya this.. How many times have you heard of an 88 year old being raped?.. Once again, I aint saying it didnt happen. But I live here in Ms., and I have my entire life. We're the punching bag of this country, and people love exaggerating about what goes on here. The good, and most certainly the bad.
So what im saying Gabe, is try a little harder. Give me little more than that. Dont just take a snippet of a story, and present it as if I should be "floored" by you journalistic excellence.

hmm yes well my bad, context and citation needed. the quote is from a guardian article linked in the above guardian article (link - http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2003/nov/16/popandrock2) quoting Matthew Johnson, founder of Fat Possum records. sounds like he's spent a fair amount of time in Greenville with T-Model and knows those parts well, have a read of the article, it's pretty damn good - nothing to do with my (albeit bountiful) journalistic excellence. yall definitely know more of those parts than me, but I'm guessing he knows more bout them than you; either way, sounds pretty fucked up and scary to me. anyway my post was meant as more of a friendly jibe than a smug put-down, but its hard to convey these things over these internet forums without using those fuckin' smileys. happy reading

Annnnd there were have it. True, a smiley here or there wouldve helped to convey the friendly nature of your post, but had there been a link, or a full name instead of just "Johnson". I wouldve been much more receptive to your quip. Very true, he does know more about Greenville than I do. But im pretty sure I know more about Jackson, Ms. than he does. And if you can walk around here at night, and be relativly safe and not too engulfed in debauchery, then you sure as hell can in Greenville. People exaggerate.. The gist of my rantin'..
