Ok, first of all, Thank you to GrownSoFugly for letting me know it was Dante's birthday on June 29th. Because of her I decided to bike over to the venue and stand around outside until I found a way into the sold out Hacienda show. I was debating if I wanted to go through with it on a Tuesday night after a long day at work. I figured it would be a special night, and it truly was. I never go to shows by myself, but this time I did and I had a BLAST! Anyways, remember how I told you guys that I yelled out "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" to Dante as soon as Hacienda walked out on to the stage? Well check out what Dante wrote on his blog recently...

...I had a birthday on this one, and normally that doesnt matter, but it was on my birthday that I found out A- we have a twitter page, and B- someone reads it. As we walked onstage in Chicago, someone shouted happy birthday before the first tune. I was speechless. I thought "How do they know?" "Is my dad in the audience?" Rene informed me he tweeted it. I thought that was a nice gesture, and thanks for the birthday wishes.

I really dig this band, and maybe because I fancy myself a guitar player- I really enjoy hearing/watching Dante rip shit up. And he has great taste in gear but that's another topic altogether.

Show the man some love and sign up to follow his blog! He updates it every week or so and it's almost always funny/interesting stuff to read.

PS- Dante wasn't entirely speechless, he did look shocked/surprised but he managed to say "Thanks man" and smiled. Then he massaged our eardrums with sweet sweet music/tone.

Oh and Dante, if you're reading this... check this site for your quest

There's no black '64 but there's a red one and a few 66's and 67's. Keep checking back and you may find what you seek. I wasn't sure if you knew about this site or not.

"Gibson Trini Lopez Standard Model Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1967), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 897900, sparkling burgundy finish, laminated maple body, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

One of Gibson's more interesting 1960's creations, the Trini Lopez models were the last of the early-60's "Artist" models. The Trini Lopez signature models came in two forms, Standard and Deluxe. The Deluxe was essentially a Barney Kessel with custom appointments- a double-cutaway full hollowbody with a single sided headstock and diamond-shaped soundholes and inlay. This Standard is in some ways a more interesting instrument-essentially an ES-335 with similar decoration; much more useful as a Rock'n'Roll guitar. Why the Standard model exists at all is a bit of a mystery; Lopez himself used only the Deluxe model and seems to have little to do with this guitar.

The trapeze tailpiece carries a rosewood and plastic block with "TRINI LOPEZ Model" engraved on it, while the headstock has a plain Gibson decal. These models were introduced just at the end of 1964, and built in quantity from 1965-70. This guitar is from 1967 and is finished in "sparkling burgundy" opaque lacquer instead of the standard cherry stain. This finish was used on a range of Gibson models in 1967-8 but is fairly rare compared to the standard catalog colors. It also carries the older-style "capped' knobs making for an unusual combination of features.

Unlike Tal Farlow, Johnny Smith, or Barney Kessel (who also had Gibson models named after them) Trini Lopez was not a virtuoso jazz guitarist, but a pop/folk singer with a string of hit records in the just pre-Beatle era. Gibson described him as "...Probably the most exciting young star in the music business...His style is simple, direct without gimmicks or wizardry". Lopez main input into the design seems to have been the "diamond" cosmetics used on both models.

While the Trini Lopez standard is often described as "A 335 with a Firebird headstock' in fact the model pre-dates the introduction of the second-generation non-reverse Firebirds by more than six months; those later 'birds actually have a Trini Lopez headstock in place of the earlier sculpted 'reverse" style! Less than 2,000 total of these striking guitars were made during the six-year production run, with this year (1967) being the peak with 783 shipped. This metallic red finish is quite rare, only used on a very small proportion of this models.

This is a great-playing guitar with a chunkier neck than most '67 era Gibsons, very fine sound and a particularly stylish look! Recently Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters has used this model extensively, and his current signature Gibson is based on it."

I signed up for his blog too...I'm one of the faceless guys. I don't think any forum/blog handle I have has an avatar picture.

I love Dante's view on gear, especially the "Hoarder" post. Don't get me wrong, I love Tom Petty and Mike Campbell, but those guys play a ton of different guitars! I thought it was cool to see Neil Young last year and the main electric he played was Old Black, he played another Les Paul for one song. His Blogs are a definite good read

I would be stoked as hell to get a chance to see these guys on the tour for this album, Lately, Big Red & Barbacoa has been getting more spins than Brothers it seems

I love Dante's tone, too. It has a nice bite and it cuts well, which is funny because I watched the "Wooly Bully" video and it looks like he was playing his Les Paul on the neck pickup!

Dave Grohl and Noel Gallagher were/are big fans of the Trini Lopez sig guitar. It does look weird, but still cool at the same time.

His switch may simply be upside down? He may have his neck bucker coil tapped? Treble boost pedal?

Anyhow, if anyone finds a BLACK 1964 Trini Lopez, stop what you're doing and notify the man.

The Trini Lopez doesn't do anything for me, but I'd love to help Dante find one.

I'm cool with my Epi reissue '56 Gold Top with P90's. I am definitely going to throw a Bigsby on it ASAP though. And I did have to replace the lame-o stock bridge P90 with a slightly overwound Lindy Fralin P90. Oh and I did replace the pots, switch, jack, and capacitors with high quality stuff.

I would like to have another Telecaster. A fat Tele just like I used to own would be great.

I don't really have a dream guitar that costs thousands or anything. I dream more about being able to play the fucking thing better, heh.

D'awww Dante, you're kinda precious aren'tcha? Glad to help you make his night.

Hacienda is quickly becoming my favorite new-to-me band. BR&B is kind of hogging my iPod lately, the beat in Prisoner is just awesome. I'll see 'em next month in NYC, I'm pretty jazzercized about that.

PS I kind of wrote off his blog because I figured it'd all be gear-nerd speak that was way over my head, but it's actually really interesting! Funny too.

I feel like I'm done on the guitar fron as well. I'd love to have something with p-90's, just because I never had a guitar with p-90's before, I have heard that the TV Jones Powertrons in my Gretsch Spectra Sonic have some p-90 flavor. I don't know if I'm missing out that much. I feel at this time I have my ground covered with my tele and gretsch. I do have a Les Paul studio that I'm trying to sell...if I could only fit true p-90's in that. I know they make p-90's in a humbucker format, but I've always heard that those still don't get a true p-90 sound...I haven't really looked into those recently so there may be more variety then the Gibson P-94 and the Harmonic Design Z-90.

I also dream about playing a little better as well, but I can blame that on myself considering I haven't forced myself into playing better in a while just kind of staying flat for the last few years.

@Incinerator

As far as humbucker-sized P90's, what leads you to believe they don't sound like P90's? I had one of these in the neck position of my fat Tele and it was heavenly!
http://store.guitarfetish.com/dr90husip90w.html

I had a white pearl pickguard so they matched, but you can choose from many different color options.

It's a P90 pickup with a humbucker sized case/cover. There's really no reason they wouldn't sound like a P90. When you see P90's with dogear covers versus soapbar covers, there's no difference in sound, it's just for different mounting/applications. The same P90 guts with a different piece of plastic over the top.

For $60 you can get a set of Dream 90's and try'em out. I can't vouch for the bridge version, but the neck version is definitely a great sounding pickup. As with all pickups you have to set the height (distance from pole pieces to strings) and wire them properly but they give you your moneys worth and then some.

Now that it's been mentioned a couple times today, I must admit, I've been listening to Big Red & Barbacoa a bit more than Brothers too. Hacienda is really kicking ass right now and I wish them the fame and fortune they deserve. It should be noted that part of the reason that album sounds so good is Mr Dan Auerbach. He plays on the album for one, and two- his production really gives that album the edge it needs. It's a perfect album. The only song I didn't dig was "Got to get back home", but even that one has grown on me after a few listens. I never get tired of BR&B and it really gets better and better each time I play it. I'm glad I snatched that one up on vinyl. GREAT summer listening.

I still don't listen to Loud is The Night much though. It was a good first effort but BR&B is where it's at. No fuck that, seeing them LIVE is where it's at! That was one of the most fun shows I've been to in a VERY long time.

PS- Fugly I <3 you.
