If you were forced to delete a track from "Brothers," which would it be? And no cheating, by saying you wouldn't delete a single track
I'm going to leave "Black Mud" out of this because that is too easy. For me it has to be "Too Afraid to Love You." This is the only track where the Keys sound a tad forced to me. I do not like that atmospheric texture in the background, it's like a bad imitation of something off "Time Out of Mind." I think the Keys can do stuff with atmospherics, like "Psychotic Girl" Lyrically, I think the theme is interesting, the whole track just does not feel convincing. Maybe it's the production on Dan's voice, it just did not resonate with me when he said stuff like "the city lights, they're driving me wild" or "what more can I do, because I'm wringing myself dry." I would love to hear this song in a more raw form, because with the atmospherics and production on this one, it just feels like the track is trying too hard to really express the singer's emotion through production tricks rather than just letting Dan and Pat's more natural emotions shine through.

Howlin' for you.
I skip it everytime.
I don't wanna start slagging the band but there's nothing I like about it from the Gary Glitter drums to the lazy chorus.
In regards to Black Mud, I'm surprised people don't like it. I'm a big fan.

 Black Mud is one of my favorite tracks!!!!!
I'd have to go with Howlin' For You as well. Great track, but my least favorite.

Part of me wants to say Next Girl. Great song, but fuck that dinosaur. I can only think of him and that lame ass video now whenever that track comes on.
But honestly, I wouldn't want to remove any of them, but if you forced me I would cut The Only One. I like it, but not as much as the others.

Hmm this is a tough one, i need to think about it more. even though you said it is too easy my "off the top of my head" pick is black mud, i do love the song, but it doesnt fit in its spot... i think it needs to be towards the end, or as a special hidden track after the last song, but the same track number, just with some dead space after it...
also ohio should have been on the album, its great, for me it is track 16 so that always ends it for me. on my iphone...

I love To Afraid To Love you. I love the whole album buut if I were forced Id cut These Days. They chorus is awesome though

I would move Black Mud to the middle so it would be Side C, Track 1 (some other re-arranging to make that flow). I would also hide Ohio at the end after a a bunch of minutes of nothing...maybe insert some nonsense the Big Come Up-esque dialogue in there, but in the Brothers theme.
As for deleting a track...sadly I think it would be Never Give You Up. I love it but at the same time I think Unknown Brother -> These Days would be just as potent of an ending to the album.

Unknown Brother, not bad at all I just can't relate to it. If they had changed the meaning and lyrics around completely, well I could really dig it. Otherwise These Days, again probably one of the best songs on the album, but to me doesn't seem to fit in music-wise. I'd love to see it on an EP or something. Take out Howlin' for You and you have the perfect length that people are bitching about.
EDIT: Howlin' for you, Unknown Brother and These Days would make a pretty fucking sick EP I think!

As for Black Mud, I'm just not a fan of instrumental tracks period. After about the third listen, I just get bored with instrumental tracks.
With Howlin' For You, I agree it's not a great track, but I think it's a fun rocker, and therefore enjoyable.
Never Give You Up, I like this song a lot, but I kind of agree with a critic who said this song would have be more at home as a B-Side.

I don't hate instrumental songs, but I think Black mud is a bit boring, but The Only one is quite boring too, however I like it more than the first..
So I say Black mud.
