Sounds like a lot of octave fuzz. Maybe Ibanez Standard Fuzz.

I can get halfway there with my Zvex Octane 3 clone, but here's a great pedal for those wacky El Camino sounds... it's basically an Ibanez Standard Fuzz clone.

Check out this demo video - the playing is not the best but you can hear some Keys riffage in there and if you use your imagination...

And if you're looking to "roll your own" Ibanez Standard Fuzz...

fuzz factory will get you in the ballpark of some of those tones on el camino. 'course you have to play with settings a bit, since it's so temperamental

I built a FF clone. It's not an octave fuzz, but yeah I guess if you mess with the stability knob (voltage sag) you can get some wacky sounds, sure.

Here's a proper demo of that SolidGold FX Formula 76...

yeah, the FF definitely isn't a proper octave fuzz, but it can produce upper octaves if you need it to. one nice trick I stumbled onto is to take a buffered boss tuner and put it in a true bypass loop, then stick that in front of the FF. that way whenever you want to stop it from oscillating crazily, you can engage the loop and the buffer kills it. you do lose a little bit of the tonal versatility and edge, but it can be a useful setup.

the formula 76 seems like it's pretty solid, from the demo. perhaps another pedal for the massive to-try list.

I know the playing in my demos sound shitty but that's o.k. It's more about the sound of the pedal than me trying to show off.

Here are some of my other octave fuzz demos.

a better sounding Formula 76

Octane 3 (currently up on eBay)

And my Ibanez Standard Wau Fuzz (same circuit as the standard fuzz)

Out of the three, I like the Formula 76 the best because it offers the most control over the sound. That's why I'm selling the Octane, plus I can sell it for a lot more than I paid for it.

ahh, I almost went for that octane 3 on ebay earlier today. I really do like that pedal, but earlier this week I made the totally silly, indulgent decision to buy an original shin-ei fy-2. I tried my best to justify the octane too(christmas gift to myself, etc.), but just couldn't do it haha.
