No not the beard, but the fuzz effects he's used.

What's your favorite fuzz sound he's made with the black keys.

I think mine would have to be either Have Love Will Travel (studio version), or Elevator from the live ep.

You play bass? Whats up?

10 AM Automatic Live on the Cyrstal ballroom DVD comes to mind. Sounds really cool when he slides up the neck in between the fills

Elevator-Live EP definitely, Summertime Blues is some raw goodness. Just saw them in Louisville and it seemed like Dan wents nuts with Thickfreakness's fuzz. It was great to see him so into the show and turning up the noise.

The best I have ever heard his fuzz sound was a bootleg of "The Breaks" at Austin City Limits Fest a while back. The closest I have been able to get to it was a fuzz face cranked, and amp loud as FFFFFF.

I like anything on TBCU, but especially Breaks. It sounds like the speaker is on the edge of destruction to me.

Least favorite fuzz sounds? I'd have to say the Magic Potion fuzz. Can't exactly put my finger on it but sounds too trebley or something.

sounds too trebly on Magic Potion? Just Got to Be is the anti-thesis of trebly to me :).

My favorite fuzz tones are thickfreakness and Same Old Thing off of The Crystal Ballroom DVD

Thickfreakness era is my favorite, with Have Love Will Travel and Thickfreakness being the standouts. Close second would be The Breaks and Til I Get My Way.

Of all of Dan's fuzz tones, I think Summertime Blues is definitely the filthiest, even though it doesn't get the nod as my favorite.

I think as far as live tones goes. Magic potion had a pretty powerful live fuzz sound.

Good call on the. Live ep version of elevator. I've always wondered if the rest of that show sounded the same. And that "live tv" version of thickfreakness from way back when is super dirty too. Now days, dan's really killin that refrain on she's long gone live. I could damn near listen to that on a loop.

Anybody know what pedals he's using for each era?

Please correct if wrong. Of course, he probably used many different fuzzes on many of the albums but this seems to be the most prominent one on each:

TBCU- Maestro MFZ-1
Thickfreakness- Fulltone Soulbender
Rubber Factory- ????
Chulahoma- Mostly Amps?
Magic Potion- Green Big Muff
Attack & Release- Not much fuzz on album but Green Muff all the way Live!
Brothers- Total Guess but maybe that Ibanez Standard Fuzz on a few tracks?
