I can buy a figured top es 339 which is going for around $1600, which is plain top price... though it does have screw holes in the bottom from a removed bigsby. OR I could buy a stratotone which just popped up on ebay and mod it like Dans. I estimate it will go between $400-800

My God that 339 is awesome!.. dude, if u got the funds to get that, fuckin get on it!.. I've never owned a Gibson, or a Stratotone. But if I could pick... how could I turn that Gibson down?! Have u played on these types of guitars before?.. what are you lookin for, out the guitar?

Yeah, I sold my es 335 to get the money. The problem with the 335 was the neck is too wide, wider then my friends SG which is strange because I thought they both came with the 1 11/16" nut. That's why I'm a bit hesitant to purchase the 339. The thing about the stratotone I'm not sure about is the p90's... I'm used to humbuckers, so I dunno how much the noise will bother me

Ive played a 335, but never a 339. What's the main difference(s)?. I've played some friends gits that humbuckers, but I'm all about the single coils. That's just me. Ive Lollar Blackface pre-CBS 60's in my American Strat. Got the humbucker option in postion 2 and 4. I dunno if you would be interested in putting those in the stratotone, but I love 'em. Not too noisy. Especially when playing with other folks, I've never had anyone complain.

A 339 is just a scaled down version of the 335, it's more like the size of a solid body.

Tough call, both are cool. The thing that always scares me about the old harmonys is that with no truss rod, you just have to pray that the neck is straight. Also, don't forget the old Harmony's have really big necks...I know you mentioned the 335 being too wide, not thick, but it's something to think about. On the flip side, the 339 is the 50's neck (thicker than the other) so necks might be a wash.

Bottom line, I'd probably go the stratotone too, and just sell it again right away if the neck sucks, you should be able to get what you paid for (or close, hopefully).

One last thing to consider...I know you buy a guitar to play, not as an investment, but all the money that you put in to mod the stratotone you're going to lose in resale value unless you find the right buyer.

I bought the 339. I got the guy to bring it down to 1550 AND that comes with installing a bigsby for me. The 335 sold for 1750, so I've got 200 from that plus another 300 saved up from work so I MIGHT be able to get the stratotone too, I would shit myself if I get both!

As for the harmony not having a truss rod, I think you're confusing it with the mars. Pretty sure the mercury has a truss rod, look at the cover slip on the headstock. And yeah, I actually prefer thick fat necks. I can give a shit about resale value. Honestly, Harmony's are extremely cheap compared to other vintage guitars; the value from the upgraded parts would likely cancel out any loss from it being non-original. Finding a buyer might be tougher, but I've seen 2 wannabe auerbach modded harmonies already so I don't think it would be a HUGE problem. (One had soap bar p90s and they had to install wood blocks for mounting, yuck!)

Wow, that's a really good deal for the 339 as it is, but throwing on the Bigsby, that's even sweeter! I'm assuming he's putting on a B7? Enjoy that thing!!

Agree on the resale value, I'm the same way, and given the popularity of the keys, I don't think you'd have that tough of a time moving it at all (should you decide to). Heck, I'd probably buy it from you if the time was right...

Yeah, that's my bad about the truss rod for the stratotone...there's definitely a TRC in the pics. For some reason I was thinking the old Harmony's don't have truss rods, but looking at pics of H77's, those definitely have TRC's too. Looking at the "name dan's guiatr" pics again, maybe it's the Supro I'm thinking of? Anyway sorry about the confusion.
