Hey there fans of this incarnation of "The Black Keys"!

I just have to get something off my chest that's been killing me for YEARS!

Ok; so I first found the black keys in '02 when i read about a two piece band that played the blues out of a basement in akron ohio. Their story was intriguing, so i decided to listen to their debut album "The big come up". I was blownnn away. I was an instant fan. I wasn't just a regular fan, i was OBSESSED with this band.

I bought the cd immediately, and every cd as they came out; all the way up to "Rubber Factory". Then came Magic Potion, boy was i so pumped for some more amazing blues. Boy was i wrong.

Instead the band i loved so dearly, and plugged to everyone i knew. A side note on that point, back in those days i was the only guy that knew of the keys, and people would listen to 1 or 2 songs and say it was garbage, and hate on it. I remember distinctly hearing many many times "it's a bad rehash of the white stripes". I'd just laugh, because it never mattered, i had my gem of a band.

But like i said, Magic Potion was a pure let down. I knew that album was the beginning of the end. I was right. All their subsequent albums, after that was not the black keys i knew and loved. It was some weird hipster re-incarnation of a once legendary hard working band. I was gutted.

Now those same people who had no idea about the keys / said they sucked now love them. What a turn of events. Why do you think that is?

Well then came this past summer, they rolled through toronto, so figured since i loved'em so much back in the day, i might as well see them live. I was glad i did. They played a lot of the older stuff, made me soooo happy.

But what was sad, when they played all the old stuff no one went crazy, no one knew it. It was so disappointing, but when that horrendous song "tighten up" came up, well you know what happened ...

Anyway, this band sold out just as bad as Kings Of Leon did. [remember their older stuff? Bet ya don't ...]

Anyway, this band officially is a skeleton of what it was / could of been. I won't say they suck, because back then they rocked. Now they are a steaming pile of ...

Anyway, I own the first 3 album on vinyl and cd, seen them once live. That's more than enough.

Thanks Dan and Pat for selling out, you've lost a hardcore fan. You will never receive another cent of my money.

Sincerely,

One disappointed [former] fan.

I kind of understand your sentiments. But you have to realize that TBK never formed as a "blues band". In fact, Dan and Pat have said on record that they think 90% of blues music is bullshit; they drew from many other influences as well. This album is definitely not my favorite right now, but it may possibly grow on me. Or I am just overthinking everything.

That's perfectly ok. Most people don't understand what the black keys were, and just how pure their music was.

Anyone who thinks this incarnation of the keys is worth anything good ... never read the blurb on the limited edition big come up album. That blurb still makes me smile.

I'd also bet a lot of people never read that blurb either ...

If they really said it they don't have a fucking clue about blues music.

I haven't followed them at all for a long time, so i have no idea about those comments. I just remember what they used to look like. I find that hard to believe, i think they are just playing into this hipster look / culture in order to sell more records.

I guess money / major labels finished them off ... wouldn't be the first time a major label destroyed a band.

Take a look @ the tour dates, they will play only in big venues, looks like they have lost
the attitude they had back in the days...and now they prefer to organize 6 uk tours instead of dates in places where they are not popular like in uk or america.
Now is more probable to see them live in mexico city in a big festival sponsored by Corona instead of a small venue with 2000 fans in a small town.

I saw them in July.. They opened with Thickfreakness.. The crowd went fucking nuts!. True... they went nuts for Tighten Up as well. They have changed. Fucking get over it! Don't listen to them.. just listen to their first three albums,.. over, and over, and over, and over again.. That's what makes ya happy do it. Also,.. the VAST majority of the people here on this forum know all about the early stuff. I pretty goddamned sure they have the "blurb" as well. Be it on the actual vinyl jacket, or on this forum. Did you expect to enlighten someone? What you said, your opening statement, brought absolutely nothing new to the table. It's totally worthless. You talk about Dan,and Pat being hipsters. The title, your original post of this thread, you... Wreak of hipster.

Dude, if you want more of Dan's "strictly blues" music, then here's something for ya. http://thesteamengine.blogspot.com/2010/08/barnburners-rawboogie-ep-dan-auerbachs.html

It's not TBK, it's Dan's old band that played a few bars in Akron.

I have no idea what concert you attended, but when i was there in Toronto, the response for that song and other older songs was horrendous as compared to the "hits". It was a sad sad site.

You are the type of person that can't see the big picture, just because people on this forum MAY [and i say MAY, because i bet most don't] know about it; is because, this is a site that attracts people who are more than your average fan. Go out and ask the random hipster/fan about the old stuff, i bet 3/10 will know about the old stuff, and even less that could actually have a conversation about the sound they had back then. You suffer from tunnel vision; good sir.

I am FAR from a hipster haha. Just because I use proper grammar, and paragraph structure; doesn't mean I'm a hipster. In fact I'm more into grunge/thrash metal/alternative rock etc [and run a metal podcast], i'm also a huge blues fan.

I am not your average Keys [former] fan.

Long live boring rock-pop and bands with no soul! *thumbs down*

I still don't understand the people that come on to forums to explain there negative point of view on the band.

I highly doubt they read this shit. I highly doubt it would bother them if you don't enjoy their new music. What is the point of coming on here and saying you are dissapointed? Just be dissapointed? No need to tell us all about it.

No people don't know the big come up. No they don't get it. But who fucking cares. Their new music is still awesome and in glad people can tell that there is still something special about the way they go about their work. We aren't fucking groupies. We all have objective opinions.

Enjoy the three albums you love. Maybe one day you will feel like a less blues album and you will enjoy their later work.

"If it sounds good. It is good." Duke Ellington. Music is that simple at the end of the day.
