Tighten Up
Howlin' For You
Next Girl
Everlasting Light

For once the 4 piece was actually mixed properly. Hopefully this will sway all the doubters. Howlin' For You sounded especially good, I dare you to tell me that they could pull it off like that without the bass and keys. It's nice when you can actually hear the other instruments!

Indeed very good live footage/video...but man the keyboard and bassist seem to be playing the most SIMPLIFIED/DUMBED DOWN version of what they could be playing. And on top of that, the keys always sound so damn puny and weak. All of these factors still have me grumbling that they even bothered to take two other people on tour with them. I usually block the bass and keys out and just imagine the two of them playing the songs and they sound better to me that.

The keyboard/bass part on the album was never complicated to begin with. The GUITAR lines have never been complicated, Dan has always played a simple "dumbed down" style. It just doesn't sound puny to you because he's got the amp on 10 with a chunk of gain or fuzz. Some people just aren't able to appreciate simple calmer music I guess.

It's like what, you go home and bash your head into a wall all day, do push ups non stop, headbang while eating your lucky charms in the morning? don't you ever have any other emotions? Can't you go outside and appreciate the beauty of a tree?

Nah I'm kidding though, I can see where you are coming from. It is sort of like a different genre. The new stuff doesn't rock as hard as the old. The new stuff is much more restrained and mellow

Yes, we should all appreciate the beautiful trees...

That footage was really good, nice find! I like being able to have a clearer picture of what Dan's doing along the neck, since I'm still developing my transcribing by ear skills.

I like that they have done a mix on this tour, between the songs with just Dan and Pat and the songs with Leon and Nick joining in. I thought it was cool to hear some of the new songs with the added instruments because it did make them sound bigger. Some of the tracks on Brothers have more minimal guitar, and I think having the extra weight that the keys and bass add allows Dan to do some more textural things with his guitar parts, rather than having to carry the entire melody. I like seeing what else they can do besides rocking our faces off, gives them more to choose from when it comes to building setlists.

I fucking hate trees, I used to cut them down for a livin'
I appreciate what The Black Keys have become. I have more to choose from them now for whatever mood I'm in. I do think they are kind of weak live though

I saw this on facebook today. I only saw the Tighten Up one though and I could only get about half way through it. I got to bored and irritated.

Phaxanation said exactly what I feel. The bass and keys are simplified too much. Yeah, they weren't complex to begin with but the studio version of Tighten Up had groove in the bass at least. I thought that was the whole reason for adding the others, I mean if anybody can play simple one-at-a-time bass notes it would be Dan -AND he can do it while playing guitar (it's true I've seen him do it before). As far as the dare, I'm not saying they could pull it off "like that" without bass and keys, but they could still pull it off... maybe better.

And as far as the better in the mix thing/actually hearing them...
when one couldn't hear them before wasn't that basically like them not being there? Wouldn't that just equal Dan and Pat but toned down and melow? If you couldn't hear the others before it means Dan and Pat can still play those songs. Turn them up and they will sound pretty wicked.

Another opinion: Have Dan play Only One the way he pulled off Oceans and Streams... I think Dan could replace the bass and keys single-handedly and make the song tolerable live.

That's just my two cents. I'm eager for these rumors of more albums this year so I can move on to something else. I'm over this Brothers thing already. It's good but I wish I could say I love it.

This I can agree with... except for the better part.

No. It sounded empty, thin and too spacious. The instruments filled out the sound.

He could, it probably would sound good too, but we already have Attack and Release. I like it the way it is, it's different and it's fresh, I'd even say I like it better than A&R. Just my opinion.

Me too, though I do love Brothers. I'm eager because of the curiosity. I mean they pulled a rap calab out of nowhere, then they went to soul, I'm just wondering if they will be able to keep the surprises coming.

For those that can't view, use a proxy. I had to do that recently and I don't recall how I did it exactly but just google proxy and within a few mins you should be able to find a site you can use to view the content. For what it's worth, you aren't missing much. These vids sound kinda reserved, restrained, and at the same time sound polished and shiny.

I feel like the next Keys album is going to be raw return-to-form brass knuckles to the jaw rock n roll. Brothers is great but it seems like they could very easily want to break away and go the other direction with their next one. Just a guess though. And a hope.

Yeah, I thought that after A&R came out. I thought they were just experimenting with that album. Especially when I heard about how "raw" this album was going to be.

I have the same hope though.

PM me if you'd like a "cookie" if you took away the "okie" and replaced it with "py".

Ok, whatever. People who can't see it, just PM me and we'll get it sorted.

I think they will continue down this direction, given the commercial success , the amount of the checks they have been/will be getting. Not to mention at least some pressure from label to release something like Brothers II

Plus, who wants to take a risk taking a pay cut after getting the gig you worked for for 10 years to get?

I dont know too many bands that after hitting it "big", that go back to the old or similar formula...

Ok I dunno why I'm bothering to get worked up over this, but read the comment section. There's a lady gaga fanboy calling the Keys crap and money hungry, and then saying lady gaga is so amazing because she sells so many records. And he's got these pseudo intellectual posts. Gah how can people be so stupid!?
