It seems like very few Magic Potion songs make it onto a setlist these days. Maybe "Your Touch" but I can't think of any others. I could be wrong though... Posted 1 year ago #

Yeah Your Touch is always on the set list. Sometimes they played You're the One during A&R tour. I don't think they've played anything else since. Magic Potion is as two piece as it gets... mostly single note riffs and drums, lots of empty space, it's their simplest album. They were going for a bigger band feel with Brothers, that's my theory for why they don't play much MP anymore. Ron Paul 2012 Posted 1 year ago #

Me too. My fav video of all time was them at Amoeba Records! But that was back when they were pushing the album. I meant recently. Posted 1 year ago #

Magic Potion has been the Keys' album that's been getting the heaviest rotation for me lately, not totally sure why, just has been resonating with me. Also, for someone like me who sucks at guitar, some of the songs on this album are the most accessible to learn...and my drummer buddy likes 'em too, so win-win for me. Posted 1 year ago #

haha yes, Magic Potion is probably the easiest of all TBK's albums for an aspiring guitarist to learn from. No finger-style to complicate things, all just blues riffs and power chords for the most part. Strange Desire was delicious live too. It was always Strange Desire/The Flame, just like Stack/Busted. You know what, there aren't very many live videos of the Magic Potion era... I wonder why this is? There's a bunch of ghetto fan made phone and DVR recordings but that's about it. oh how I wish the fabchannel Amsterdam video was still around! Posted 1 year ago #

thats why i still say a live chronicle dvd+cd spanning 2002 to now would be awesome. they shot so much footage for example at every lolla theyve been at, wonder if they still have some of it. those shows were great. I'm Glad!? hell yes. they definitely need their version of The Kids Are Alright. Posted 1 year ago #

I remember the Magic Potion tour like it was yesterday. It was a hell of a show. My wife and I saw them in Chicago at The Vic. I remember the guys coming out and I was just floored by Dan's appearance. He had this psychedelic mountain wildman thing going on. Long hair, flannel shirt, INSANELY shaggy beard. They just ripped into their set and didn't really stop to say a fucking thing. I think my jaw was on the floor the whole show. Dan beat the living piss out of the venue and everyone in it. His weapon of choice - cream colored "lawsuit" Ibanez SG Custom. I'm probably wrong, but I remember thinking that was Dan dealing with fame. It seemed like that was him letting himself go and just doing what he do. Grew the hair, grew the beard, fuck the critics, wildman letting loose with tasty riffs for days... I love the rawness of the album, and the tour followed suit. That was where he/they were at the time, and it shows. Raw, untamed, unashamed, balls to the wall, crank the fucker up to 11 and strap your ass in. Long live MP. It's a fantastic album. That's the first album that Dan's vocals were noticably treated with effects. But other than that, it was no frills rock and fucking roll. It was the critics least favorite album (judging by the reviews when it came out), but it's got a special place in my record collection. I love how the vinyl has that egg yolk graphic on the center label. "When the power of Love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." -Jimi Hendrix Posted 1 year ago #

that is also the first keys album i got. i'm from the "good ole days" (sarcasm) when music was good i.e. the seattle grunge wave, alternative broke out, bands proved that you didn't have to have the #1 video on MTV to sell albums anymore. and then, to paraphrase Hunter S Thompson, the wave broke and went rolling back out to sea. we were back to new kids on the block. and iu had read articles about the keys in Spin and places like that, just hadn't gotten around to checkin 'em out. then lo and behold, the gods smiled on me. i was waiting on my wife to get ready to go out (as i usually am) and was just idling on the internet. amazon.com threw magic potion into my "we recommend" pile. i clicked on "modern times" at random, and promptly had my face peeled back. i felt like a neutered dog that just got his boys back. and i been snatching up every keys disc i can get my hands on ever since. each disc has its own personality and aura...but they're like my children. you love them all equally, but you just love each of them's traits and quirks differently. idk. best band ever. thanks Pat and Dan. i can see the wave building into a tsunami with you guys. Me too. Partially just because it was my first time seeing them live. I was just floored during the whole show. Was a little sad afterward actually, was questioning myself why I waited that long to see them live. Regret it even more now as the inevitable move up to bigger venues. Posted 1 year ago #

MP was not nearly my first Black Keys album but it can easily throw hands with the rest of them. I think I started with Thickfreakness and then went and grabbed TBCU. Then Rubber Factory came out, and so on. I was lucky enough to find out about them while they were touring Thickfreakness. Posted 1 year ago #
