The way the Black Keys do "Never Give You Up" reminds of of this badass underground Chicago soul tune from 1969 by this guy Renaldo Domino called "Not Too Cool To Cry".

Yes that is seriously the song title, and yes it is a dude singing (sounds a bit like a female).

And if you dig it, check out this compilation (this song is on there) of amazing underground Chicago soul from the late 60's and early 70's...

This is one of the best covers they've done. If any of you are into true soul music (after Brothers you should be), Eli Paperboy Reed and the True Loves is a great band to check out. This song makes me want to call him Danny Paperboy Auerbach.

so far this is the only song I've really liked from the Brothers album.

My guess would be many of the musicians on the board (especially guitar players) are having a problem with the albumn because a lot of this material would be difficult to pick up a guitar and start playing. I don't mean difficult in learning but difficult in the sense that its not a Thickfreakness or Magic Potion dominated guitar albumn. Riffs and songs in general on those albumns are fun to pick up and play and there isn't really much else needed. Theres a lot more going on on this albumn.

This is just a guess, purely a guess.

I play guitar, and it has no affect on what I think of this albumn. I was raised on soul music. I feel like a kid listening to this. Brilliant.

Definitely one of the highlights of the album. All the songs are amazing though. As of now this is my favorite Key's album. I think people should open up their minds just a little bit more and not expect them to do the exact same thing over and over again. To be honest that would be pretty lame if all they released were albums like TBCU and Thickfreakness.

hey thelengths man i'm a guitar player and the guitar work on this album is by far my favourite of dan's ever!! i absolutely love the blues MP and TBCU rock but this is in a league of its own, the guitar back everthing!

the guitar is still understated as is everything really. Understated but at the front if you know what i mean?? the pinnacle of less is more really.

ten cent pistols guitar work is amazing and to me i like that the guitar is like this... it gives me another step to aim for!!

well ... I hate playing guitar even though I'm a guitar player myself, I don't know why it's a complicated relationship haha. I think the new album is pretty damn good don't get me wrong, Brothers is growing on me just like Attack and Release did.

@tbkmagic haha right on.

I'm just one of those "die hard old school Black Key's fans". I have been letting Brothers soak in and I think is very good. I'm definitely buying the album and going to their show in June 4th.

I defy anyone who looks at the title of this thread and doesn't think of Rick Astley.

Damn you lumberjack!! i keep having to get that out of my head!!

does anyone else feel like it would have been funny (obviously highly inappropriate) if dan changed the lyrics to

"Baby don't you understand!! what your doin to the dan!!"

haha, speaking of lyrics/jokes...

In Everlasting Light when Dan sings "I'll hold and never scold" it almost sounds like "I hold vanilla scones"

Just wanted to say that Never Give You Up is currently my favorite track on Brothers.

The 'Keys have always been great with covers. Especially Junior Kimbrough covers. But even Have Love Will Travel is fantastic and Act Nice & Gentle is amazing.

This new cover is even above and beyond the standard they've set.

There are many great things about this cover, and I hate to be all "ooh Dan is so dreamy" but his vocals are outstanding on this track. Especially love the way he sings the lyric "do you see these tears!?"
