eta:

"Rock & roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world," he says, blowing cigarette smoke out the window of his rented East Village loft a few days before the band heads to L.A. "So they became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be shit – therefore you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world. Fuck that! Rock & roll is the music I feel the most passionately about, and I don't like to see it fucking ruined and spoon-fed down our throats in this watered-down, post-grunge crap, horrendous shit. When people start lumping us into that kind of shit, it's like, ‘Fuck you,' honestly."

In case anyone is curious...here is what Reddit's music community (approximately 420,000 users) are saying about the cover and Pat's comments:

/r/Music

I see both sides of the argument...

I commented later down in that thread and said this:

I think its important to consider the two bands' careers too.
Yes The Black Keys are on the cover of RS, have NYC apartments, jet-set to LA frequently (and the rest of the world), but they also worked their balls off to get there. Like, ten years of scraping by in minivans and shitty touring buses. Ten years of tiny venues and semi-respectable record sales.
I read this excerpt from the standpoint of Pat's chagrin at not only the fucking exhaustive time he and Dan have put in, but at the realization that there is an entire fucking world of insanely good music out there that is routinely ignored because its not on the radio or playing during Superbowl halftime shows. From that standpoint, in my opinion, its hard to blame the guy for being a little miffed.

I've been reading this on reddit all day and just stopped by and saw you posted this. They are tearing him apart for hating on Nickleback. I've never seen so many people sticking up for Nickleback. I feel like I'm in an alternate universe right now.

Make sure your sneaker laces, they get tied.

He oughta delete his twitter-account. Must be making him insecure and selfconsious to read all those negative comments about his drumming or his looks.

But seriously Pat, how do you feel? LOVE his brutal honesty. Music is really fucked up right now. Ain't shit on the radio that grabs my ear. But the record industry owns the radio stations and jam their shit down our throats. If i could, i'd have a stereo in my ride that had no AM or FM at all! I listen to Slacker or my MP3 player, that's all i need.

I will not listen to radio. Started listening to strictly my own mp3 two years ago and never stopped.. It's so nice not knowing what pop music sounds like.

My heart's on fire, with a strange desire.

Yes! +1

But you know, when the ammegedon comes, and thy pile up the bodies...I will be in the cool pile and many of you will be in the "suck" pile. That's it.

The article is really funny. I love those guys in interviews.

I concur! Fucks sakes! Nickleback? Seriously?

Yeah Pat takes a pounding but he's brilliant at turning the bashing to his advantage and he never fails to deliver the wit. Besides the man's a beast on the drums. No one can argue with his talent or vitality... well technically they can argue with both and often do... but fuck 'em. They're wrong anyway.

Why is everyone getting upset/worried? He did pick on the punching bag of the music station. It's like calling a prostitute a whore to her face.

Besides, he's a big boy, he can take care of his own. He knew that would probably happen (it's rolling stone for fuck's sake, people still hold that shitty mag to high regard for some reason).

They did the same thing with rolling stone when brothers came out except I think it was Dan and it pretended not to know who lady gaga was...difference was back then nobody knew who they were and it wasn't the main cover piece.

It just the same old thing but this time the tree fell in the woods and everybody heard it. Reddit is the indigestion/regurgitation of the internet, the master troll. People there feel good by bashing what's big so that they maintain their uber hipness. they just don't realize that they've become what they hate: hipsters hating on hipsters who hate on people for not being hipsters..

@Tilly: You know what pop sounds like, look up el camino.

1 more thing. The radio is dead, but some of it is good (classic rock/oldies and this other station I found that plays old school hip hop)

I've always thought the reason Pat was so funny is because he just said whatever was on his mind and it usually jibed with what I was thinking or what my friends and I would say to each other. Now that he's a 'name' I guess people aren't expecting him to say what he feels.
