We're trying to raise money for a local musician friend of ours who had a nasty fall, and is bedridden for a few months.
I've got an old, signed acoustic guitar, one of the many that Dan actually played, and we want to use it to raise the most money possible for our friend. Raffles are the best way of doing it, but there are legal issues. Ebay is another possibility, but I'd rather give everybody a chance, rather than one rich dick.
If anybody has experience or suggestions, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks!
PS-the first person who replies to this query, only wanting to know what kind of guitar it is, will receive a swift kick in the nuts.

Nappy, I would highly recommend Kickstarter.com It's a website my band is actually currently using in order to fund-raise so we can release our album. It's really cool because whoever donates money to the cause gets a prize of some sort and you can engineer it so that there are different levels of prizes depending on how much money the individual donates. I'm sure you could incorporate the guitar into this somehow and make it the grand prize, or maybe even make multiple levels of prizes depending on who donates what amount of money. I realize it's not exactly a typical fund-raise, and it's no eBay or anything like, but I think it would be a great opportunity for fans to get Black Keys related prizes and still donate to a great cause. The website takes a very low percentage of what's actually raised. Again, I'm sorry about your friend's incident. I hope they're able to make a speedy recovery! I have a few friends that set up an online auction to help a child with cancer. I sent an email to ask how they set it up and what the costs were to run everything. Once I hear back from them I'll PM you the info. Sorry to hear about your friend, I hope we can find a way to help them during this tough time. Another option might be to offer to send everyone that donates an email that contains something no one has ever seen. Like a video of behind the scenes stuff or pictures that haven't been released before. Something low cost and exclusive to those who donate. Make a specific email release date that way it can't be forwarded through email and defeat the purpose of the fundraiser. It might be an issue with WB though, but worth a mention. Make sure your sneaker laces, they get tied. @unluckylaika Posted 1 year ago #

Sorry to hear Nappy. Im sure everyone on this board, even the broke ass musicians, will pitch anything that can help. Let us know when you get this organized and ill be the first to send $50 canadian dollars your way. (That works out to about 47 cents in USD) Posted 1 year ago #

I reckon what'd be sweet is to pay for a video of dan explaining guitar techniques and guitar gear stuff and some ways he does things. Bit. Hard to do when he's got bugger all time though! Haha and prob a bit unrealistic! But that'd be cooll! Sorry to hear about this friend of yours nappy. I busted my back at work a couple of weeks ago and missed out on a bit of work and lost a bit of pay because of it so I know it sucks to be helpless like this! Not quite the same extent but difficult nonetheless. I can donate in Aussie dollars which should pretty well be the same as a us of a dollar right now!! Take that Canada!!!! Oh and nappy when you gonna record us your version of when the night comes??? Posted 1 year ago #

Kickstarter is a great idea. Also what about posting silent auction on tbk website and the winner wouldn't necissarily have to pledge the most... But all hopefull winners put what they'd donate as well as a 100 word statement why they want guitar, what they'd do with it, etc. Have a small panel decide the winner based on a combo of silent monetary pledge and supporting statement. Nappy: having played in the Kent/akron/Cleveland scene awhile (2000-2004) would you mind sharing who the musican is, by post or PM? Also I'll be in Kent for folk fest, and would happily Bring along and donate a matted 18x24 photo of dan or pat from this years show at the Pageant for you to use as well if it could help raise money for this person in need (can pm you a link to photos). Lastly, let us know where we can donate a few bucks (ie paypal, a fund you may have set up, etc). Having not wked on my own in 7 months I can understand a bit what this guy/gal is going through... Sounds good, i think the raffle would be easiest. I was thinking somewhere along the lines of a lottery but that would be too much hassle and is basically a more complicated version of a raffle lol. the best way could be to use this website... get everyone to leave their email addresses, put all the email adresses into a hat and just pick a winner or if you have multiple prizes pick a few names out. my friend used the above website when they did a walk for help the heroes, its really easy, allows people to donate what they want and it is all monitored, checked and kosher! Good luck and keep us informed about the event and on his progress! "When the sweats dried in, It smells like Rock n Roll" Posted 1 year ago #

One problem with Kickstarter is that it's an all-or-nothing prospect. You set a goal, and if you don't reach that goal in the allotted time, no money changes hands. Great for funding projects, not so great for cases like this. Now This Sound Is Brave - http://nowthissound.com "Somewhere in my soul, there's always rock and roll." -Joe Strummer Posted 1 year ago #
