You know, I see a lot of love for Dan around these parts. As a guy who started out as a drummer (and still plays) it kind of pains me to see Pat overshadowed a bit.
It's always *Dan* this, and *Dan* that...yadda yadda.... Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, but I can't help but think Pat's contribution to the band gets taken for granted, sometimes. And while I can't speak for Mr. Auerbach, I can only imagine the huge influence Pat had on him.
The Black Keys with a different drummer wouldn't sound anything like the Black Keys we know and love.
Even though I played drums for years, I don't think I ever realized how dramatically subtle differences in drumming can effect the whole vibe of a song, until I started playing guitar and jamming with various other drummers. I don't think I realized how a different drummer can either open you up to different possibilities, or outright force you to approach things differently than you would have otherwise. Even alter your style. It really is the driving force, and does so much to set the mood.
So I'd like to shout out some props to Pat Carney, a grooving drummer, with a great ear for the song.

many drummers are creative but over do it, or they're reserved but lack excitement. pat is the rare guy that manages to be a human metronome but plays so creatively its refreshing

That's why I finally joined this forum. I recognize basically everyone here is a guitarist, and so being a drummer, I hope to represent and celebrate what Pat has to offer.
I understand why everyone loves Dan. He's a great guitarist, singer, songwriter, frontman, stylist, etc(shit, I tried guitar, but I can't put my heart and soul into it), but Pat's drum work is so straight-forward yet original, I can't even stress how much he has influenced me as a drummer (even more-so than Bonham or Starr)
He definently has the perfect drummer mentality, of holding down the low end, but making sure you know it's him each time you here The Black Keys play.

i think pat comes across not only on his grooves, but he rubs dan in a totally none bromantic way, the right way, and helps draw the songs out of him. without their friendship and relationship in general the band would not be the same, their sense of humour, is almost identitcal, but also sometimes comes across as totally opposite. pat has some outrageous things to say and do n i think he helps dan be the rock star he is.

Lots of love for Pat. I hate to admit it, but I tend to, basically, ignore drummers. It's not a conscious thing, they just get sublimated into the mix. Pat is one of the few drummers who makes me sit up and take notice. I know I go Dan-centric a lot, but a song like "Strange Times" wouldn't be anything without Pat. And I never say this about drumming, but Pat's work on "The Go Getter" is fucking sexy.
Plus, I dig dudes in glasses.

good point JF. there IS much love for Pat here, but yeah the frontman always gets more notice. clearly TBK is Dan and Pat, or Pat and Dan and would not be the same otherwise.
though i am not a musician, i always seemed to gravitate to the beat of the drums and maybe "wished" i was a drummer in another life. or maybe i used to think it would be easier to play drums than guitar, piano, etc...either way PAT RULES!!!!
small side note, April...Armstrong Bearcat Band, Screaming Rooster, Sat. nite...these guys rock out and drummer Billy Coakley is amazing. they play 99% rock/blues covers, but make it more like a concert with extended versions, medleys, improv, etc. Butch Armstrong on guitar hypnotizing and Mike Barrick on bass is one of the best i have seen in the area...these guys have FUN playing together and it shows...check it out.
well...the look of the cake, it ain't, it ain't always the taste

I totally dig Pat just as much as Dan. I mean, he did record the early stuff...His touch is what make TBK, TBK! Dan put out a great solo album. Some of the songs might have had a similar feel as a TBK album, but there was just something missing. Pat has a killer groove and can pound the death out of a drum...sometimes at the same time.

mac - Looks like Armstrong is actually playing Friday, when I already have plans to see Lou Barlow. But thanks for the tip. I'm checking out some of his stuff on YouTube right now.

I dont see any lack of love for pat, especially around here. Dan himself points out that Pat is one half of what makes the black keys. From my perspective, I've never really cared enough about the drums to really sit and focus in on the drumming of a particular song. Pat has changed that for me. Pat's performance on brothers was the first thing that really caught my attention on a number of the tracks on that record. I've posted many times before on how unbelievable I think the guy is live in person. Not to mention Pat has always seem like a real down to earth guy who treats his fans real well.

Brothers is definitely as much Pat's album as it is Dan's. The difference with laying the drums and bass first is that Pat drives the songs this time around.

Patrick does most of the talking when both of them are in an interview. At least from the interview's I've seen. Patrick's drumming is like Lasagna, perfect layers of beats and fills and the perfect recipe for satisfaction. Without Patrick the band gets more boring. Dan's the man without a doubt, but Patrick is the cheese of the quesadilla.
You play bass? Whats up?

Hey, the tie fits the suit! Hahahaha, if Patrick is Lasagna, then Dan is a new york slice.
