Wondering if anyone on the board plays slide guitar? I've really been focusing on it for about a month now and really dig it. Been playing with both a brass and glass slide. Both sound great depending on what your going for. I've only been messing with standard tuning at first, which I'm finidng is a bit tougher but well worth it.
I love the blues and have been playing blues style music with slide but I'm wondering if any of you know of any music where slide is used and its not primarly blues. If anyone knows of any or has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Also like to hear from anyone else who plays slide.

I play slide. I play primarily in open-G. Instead of EADGBe, tune to DGDGBd. You can jam on some Stack Shot Billy in that tuning, and many other fun songs. Don't forget your capo! Capo + Slide = fun times.

I have a glass and a brass as well. I use my ring finger because my pinky is too weak and stupid. I play slide electric and acoustic. Good times. I want a banjo...

I actually have to use my pinky, the joint on my ring finger is damaged, so that is my weakest. I'm going to experiment with some different tunings this weekend. I've read a lot that with standard you have to be very careful about muting all the strings you aren't playing, and I've found that to be true. I've heard with opening tunings you can be a little less concious of that. Is that true?

That's exactly right and precisely why I play open-G so much. The only string that doesn't get used much during open-G is the fattest/lowest D string (string closest to your face while playing), easy to mute anyhow.

Tuning to open-G is VERY easy.

1. Drop your fat E string down to match your normal D string.
2. Drop your A string down to match your normal G string.
3. Drop your skinny e string down to match your normal D string.

Done.

Just a Little Heat by the black keys is also a great one that is open G and uses a slide.

I think we're forgetting the first song on the big come up, busted. By far my favorite slide tune

While open G is a great blues tuning for slide, I feel like I have to speak up for open D. Tuned low to dop DADF#AD, this is the tuning used on some great blues songs from Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Duane Allman, Ry Cooder and Derek Trucks. I think that this tuning is better suited for lead work than open G, but is perhaps less good for open position riffing like "Stack Shot Billy" or The Stones' "Ventilator Blues." Anyway, very cool tuning. Can be raised a whole stop to open E, EBEG#BE. This tuning is better for electric, as it makes the strings a little tauter against the slide. Two examples of great open D and E: Allman Brothers cover of "Statesboro Blues" from the Fillmore album, or Ry Cooder's haunting cover of Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark is The Night," off of Ry's eponymous album.

I play a bit of slide not much tho, i smashed 2 or 3 glass slides after gigs when i was pretty drunk, kept droppin them on tiled floors n concrete floors lol! got steel and brass as well. i cant seem to get a decent enough sound so i dnt tend to use it that much, i think me n the band have 2 songs on which i play some slide... i have to use myring finger mainly coz ma lil finger is too small... but i find usin my ring finger hinders me a bit as i need to play chords as well dnt really wanna be takin it on n off mid way thru songs! i also got an acoustic song on my youtube n myspace called tombstone shadow which i think i did in A which sounds ok pretty simple stuff tho! if u wanna check it out jst search chris dorgan on myspace n pootube x

i have a little steel slide that i use on my pinky which helps alot if you have a small slide that fits real snug.
I know technique wise if you are playing bottleneck style your suppose to keep the top edge of the slide at just above the same height level as the top thick string. Cant remember why now but it is suppose to be better.

I play a bit of lap slide and i know that my favourite tuning in that is DADDAD.
It is extremely versatile in that it allows you to go major and minor when your playing.
If you play around on the 2nd and 4th fret it gives you a happy sound and then just move up one fret to the 3rd and 5th fret and its all depressed moody blues. really good for solo stuff with a stompbox is what i mainly do.

i have a sheet that shows about 4 different scales in DADDAD tuning if anyone is interested i can scan it and chuck it up here.
