Hey I'm in the market for a new vocal mic, I currently use beta57a & sm57's, but my vocals always seem a bit muddy at live venues(not at all acoustically) , anyway I've read that all mics have a signature eq that will augment some peoples voice while flattening others. I've had a few singers tell me they have had poor luck with sure's vocal curves. Anyway I think this may be part of the problem, I'm sort of debating between the EV N/D767 and the Sennheiser e935 wondering if anyone has any experience in this field or recommendations... I plan on A/B'ing them but just out for any advice I can get right now.

P.S. I have some tonal similarities to Dan(not near as amazing as him) just curious anyone know what he uses live?

Thanks everone,
Zack

SM58? Just a suggestion. Or maybe there's a way to add a preamp or eq of some sort to dial out the mud? I don't know much about live sound or recording. Sorry man.

seems like dan's fond of the sm57 in his studio. do you have a regular sound guy or is it per gig basis? ask the sound guy to adjust the eq, theyre working for you, prod em around a bit. i do this all the time with my own mixer. just take out the lows and boost the mids to cut through more

Oops I meant beta58 & sm58....

and raunchy it's not a huge issue It just seems that I have to bump the vocals a bit more than I should have to to float them on top vs. being able to cut through the mix... I really think the mics curve could be flattening out my sweet spots, I mean I sound completely different through the condenser mic I recorded on(obviously, but I mean tonally it sounds more like me)..... trial and error I guess...

I don;t think it's really anything to do with the mic. Just work more on the mix. If you have to bump the mic of more in the mix , no big as long as you are heard. Probably has more to do with the venues than anything

I've got a couple of N/D767 's, and I think they're a little brighter than the Shure's. Better signal to noise ratio, too.
But then again, my 57's and 58's are standard SM series. I have no experience with the Beta's. (or that model of Sennheiser, either.)
The EV RE-20 is a pretty underrated live vocal mic, IMO. Pricey, though.
