I've loved me some fuzz tones ever since I heard The Beatles use it. It's a different animal than overdrive or distortion, that's for sure. OD and Dist can be done pretty effectively with single coil (strat, tele) Humbuckers, and P90's. Clean can be done on anything, but fuzz, that really elusive tone, tends to hide the best in P90's IMO. However, I have an LP (copy) that I had the Jimmy Page wiring done to and it seems to really like the fuzz tone.
But I also have another LP copy and a PRS Soapbar with Skatterbrane Firebrane P90's in it and they seem to wrap themselves around the fuzz and become one with it, rather than just push it out.
And I see in the early days Dan played a Tele alot, and we all know what Jimi was famous for (guitar wise), and they practically invented a fuzz pedal for him.
Do you think smaller single coils adapt Fuzz the best?
Humbuckers?
P90's?
Which one and why, if you don't mind me asking, I always enjoy getting others opinion on their experiences with gear. Oh and what kind of pickups does Dan have in that Harmony? They almost look like toasters, but I could be dead wrong, probably am..
Thanks for playing along!

I was about to go into a big two paragraph gush on my new Lollar P-90's, but I'll spare you.

However, I agree that P-90's do nice things with fuzz.. Depends on what your looking for.
We had a thread on fuzz recently, and it occurred to me that on most single coils, I prefer the neck pickup with the volume knob rolled down, which is almost a kind of faux P-90 vibe. (especially with treble bleed caps)

Dan's red Harmony probably has single coil "gold foil" pickups. These pickups showed up in various forms in lots of guitars made in Japan in the 60s and 70s. Ry Cooder used similar pickups in a strat body. Very cool pickups, but from what I gather, they are very hit or miss.

I think the Bobkats at least have a different cover on them, not sure if what's underneath is the same. I thought the Bobkats had a criss-cross design on them, Harmony hollow bodies have different covers with either handlebar moustache design or a row of small holes.

I might be wrong. Harmony (and the other brands these guitars were sold under) had so many variations it's hard to keep track.

Back to the original questions, I think it depends on the fuzz. I really like my fuzz face with single coils, but I like the way humbuckers sound through muff-type fuzzes.

obviously has a lot to do with the amp as well as single coils, tube's will always react differently than a solid state to any pedal really!

My vox solid state it cuts a real dry almost metally high gain fuzz when i play my tele through it but my peavey all tube deal is a much fuzzier woolier affair.

agreed. I played my tele through VOX VT15 last night. got very metal like the more I pushed it. blues junior i play through is much bassier, better fuzz through it.

I play my epi wildkat with p-90's through the blues junior. That would be my uneducated choice at the moment.

noob question, when using your various fuzzes, along with a POG and a wah wah, should the amp stay on clean channel? coz sometimes i wanna push it once the song has built up n need that extra boost so i click it to the distortion channel but just ends up soundin like a shit mess.

have your amp costumized to go to 11. just gives you that extra little bit to push you over that cliff.

I really like my TV Jones Powertrons with Fuzz. It has thickness and bite, not overly bloated and not razor sharp. I'd like to see what p-90's can do. but for me, the TV Jones are great!

I have a Fender Superchamp XD and usually use the clean channel for any pedals, although some voicings to take pedals well.
