This may be of no interest or importance to some, but for the first time(that I've seen) Dan has gotten rid of his traditional pedalboard. I've been following his pedalboard for some time now and I noticed it right away. The SNL video shows him using a mass footwitch board instead, as well as a tuner pedal, volume pedal, and whatever-the-F that octave pedal is he's using on Lonely Boy(what is that thing?).
Some gear heads may know better than me what tha big footswitch deal is he's using, maybe it's a true bypass system that links to his pedals off stage or hidden somewhere. But there's no Muffs, no Analogman stuff, not much of anything that resembles his decade-long board set up. Thoughts? Impact on sound?

He didn't need them for the song's he was playing, so why set em up? Posted 5 months ago #

Could be similar to what David Gilmour uses. He had the Big Muff and other pedals on a rack and could control them with programmable unit like Cornish. Posted 5 months ago #

Yeah, I mentioned this same thing in the SNL thread. Looks like he's using a true bypass setup. Interesting. Posted 5 months ago #

Cool, that's what I was thinking. Jimmy Page and a million others do it as well. It just struck me as odd, but I guess that's the uber-coolness that is Dan's gear progression. Posted 5 months ago #

switching systems aren't that uncommon. Especially if multiple amps are used and you need to reach certain tones that involve activating a few pedals at the same time. Dan had three amps(?) on the SNL performance. I only saw the Lonely Boy performance, but it didn't seem like he had different tones going on in that song...only boost/fuzz on the lead tone and the divebomb effect at the end, which from what I saw didn't look like a whammy...unless it was the black bass whammy or custom refinished ala Jack White. Anyone have the inside track on that octave pedal he used at the end of Lonely Boy?? Posted 5 months ago #

I was wondering if that pedal on the main riff of Lonely Boy may be a pitch shifter or something. Can't see it close enough to know, but that might do the trick. "We run this shit like a Wendy's. We're open for breakfast every morning." Posted 5 months ago #

Oh man, that's hilarious! I'm interested in whatever pitch shifter he's using because I noticed he just steps on it once when he hits that note. Maybe it's some kind of expression pedal for something more elaborate hidden behind his rig? Posted 5 months ago #

Could be. I know some of the pitch shifters have an expression pedal built in (I only have limited experience with the Boss TS-5), but his board did seem pretty sparse. Maybe he is going to the rack-mount setup since they're playing Monstrodomes now. Posted 5 months ago #

Well... he may have just put out the pedals he had to use for those two songs. That's what I do when I record or only play a few songs at something. Posted 5 months ago #

I just saw the Colbert Report performance of Gold on the Ceiling and I saw some shots of a rack mount rig right behind Dan. Yup, he's gone rack. Seems pretty convenient. His pedal board was looking pretty rowdy as of late. Very curious as to what that pitch shifter he was using is exactly. I'm sure one of us will figure it out. Cheers. Posted 5 months ago #

Seems like at both SNL & Colbert he has (from his left to right) Tuner, Volume Pedal, True Bypass controller, and whatever pitch shifter he's using. Definitely has his pedals in a rack. Fast forward to about 3 minutes into this vid for some more info on that:
