Yeah fucking Walmart getting a piece of the action now? Climb on everybody! This is the Black Keys' bandwagon express! Daily nonstop trips to Fatpockets, USA! Guh. So THAT'S why TBK had to cancel the Aussie tour... they were exhausted from carrying all these fuckers on their backs.

Anyhow... it's so hard to believe that they just used 3 mics and whatever old studio equipment was laying around at Muscle Shoals. That's basically what they said right? Hot DAMN the sound quality is fucking SUPERB. Is it just the mixing that does that or what? The volume is nice and loud and the sound quality is un fucking real. I put Brothers on when I want to make sure my equipment is all working properly - 'cause it sounds so damn tasty.

I thought the same thing Mirby. It's very hard to believe that Brothers was recorded using only 3 microphones. But that ofcourse does not mean that one song only had 3 recorded tracks to mix. Dan said in another interview that the biggest amount of recorded tracks to mix in one song was twelve. ( Or was it Tchad Blake who said this? ) Guess there's been lots of overdubs. Well...not lots of...but some overdubs.

Right right. Yeah 3 mics but not just 3 tracks per song, of course. I hear ya. It's still pretty mind blowing to hear such quality from such a minimalist approach.

I wonder how one records the drumset with three mics. I would think, at the very least, you would need two overheads, a kick and a snare mic. Most people would have a tom mic or two and a bottom snare too.

Dang.

Pobably using a certain type of mic with a very wide range/pattern or something? I know jack shit about microphones and recording, but yeah you'd think they'd need a mic on the kick and a mic on the snare for sure. And just knowing how Dan/Pat like to record, I would bet they played together drums & bass or drums & guitar so you have to figure one mic for bass/guitar. In other words, I doubt they had Pat lay down the drums while no one else played anything. It would be pretty tough to record a drum track with no other instruments to play along with. And likewise, it would be tough to play bass or guitar for an entire song with no drums to keep you in time.

That's why they get paid the BIG bucks.

maybe i'm way off here, but could they have meant that the only "muscle shoals equipment" they used were 3 mics and stuff lying around?

Cause i thought i read that they had to bring all their own stuff because it was only a shell of it's old self and no old, cool equipment from the famous days...

well...the look of the cake, it ain't, it ain't always the taste

Maybe but I read this last year when the album came out too. They said they only used a max of 3 mics at a time (per track).

yeah, i listened again and i think you are right...maybe it was that there were no instruments of any kind to play around with, jsut an empty studio...with very basic recording stuff.
